When software works so well that nobody notices it

There's a curious phenomenon in companies: when software causes problems, everyone notices. But when it works really well… nobody talks about it.
And, in truth, that is probably the greatest compliment software can receive.
Because good software shouldn't complicate things, interrupt or make teams waste time. It should simply work, be present day to day without creating obstacles, without causing stress and without forcing anyone to think about it constantly.
These are the processes that happen so naturally that they go unnoticed: the document that appears automatically in the right place, the task that is recorded effortlessly, the information that arrives on time, or the process that used to take several minutes and now happens almost without anyone noticing.
The problem is that we often only appreciate organisation when it fails.
All it takes is slow software, lost information or an overly complicated process to quickly realise the impact that small failures have on a team's pace of work. Suddenly the questions start:
“Who was responsible for this?”
“Where's that file?”
“Has anyone dealt with this yet?”
“Why isn't this up to date yet?”
When processes are well organised, these questions all but disappear. Work flows better, there are fewer interruptions, fewer repeated tasks and less time wasted looking for information.
Ultimately, the best systems are those that make work simpler without drawing attention to themselves. They work in the background, help teams save time and let people focus on what really matters.
Because the day nobody complains about the software… is probably a sign that it's doing exactly what it should.
